Finding China Part 3 – Wuzhen

china, drawing
Click on image for larger version A short bus ride from Tongxiang, Wuzhen is an ancient town - or, probably more accurately, a collective of ancient districts - built on a collection of islands surrounded by canals. While undeniably a major tourist attraction that must pull in a significant income for the local economy, it is, even so,  a living town in its own right, with some 12,000 permanent residents calling it home. While aspects of it do feel somewhat like a living museum, nevertheless, there is a buzz and a vivacity that brings the place to life. Wuzhen is characterised by narrow labyrinthine streets - (no cars here) - and of course, the canals that serve as the arterial byways through the place with shops selling local crafts. And,…

Drawing a year on

drawing, vector
I started last year - 2012 - full of good intentions of drawing and painting regularly. Well, that didn't quite happen as rather more pressing events dominated the unfolding year. Anyway, on a whim I decided to tackle another vector drawing only this time it would be a self-portrait. I based it very loosely on an extremely poor quality webcam snapshot taken in low light. The dodgy lighting meant that there was not much detail, especially in the shadows, so I decided to use this as a basis for a rough and ready approach to the drawing itself. Having completed the image and while saving it I was stunned to discover that exactly one year ago almost to the hour I'd also just created a self-portrait. So this represents something…

Fishy vector drawing

drawing, vector
It's been a while since I did any vector drawings; indeed, it's been rather too long since I did any meaningful drawings at all. What I did manage to do on a number of occasions this past year is to indulge in a little fly fishing which I found to be incredibly relaxing and good for allowing the mind to wander and wind down. I calls it ‘bird in flight’

art, drawing, vector
Mmmm. This vector business is hard enough just trying to create static forms, but trying to impart a sense of movement - that’s tricky. Here’s an attempt to do just that with a mallard coming in to land. Must be quackers. Grateful acknowledgements to Alan D. Going ape with vectors

art, drawing, vector
The fun with vectors continues. Starting to get fast and loose now. I’ve tried to capture something of the sheer mass and power of this wonderful animal. Since I first posted these images, I've created a larger version (1400 pixels wide) with added noise to increase the sense of texture and freedom. Click on the image above to load the this latest version. Grateful acknowledgements to http://www.yunphoto.net for use of source photograph.

Fowl vector artwork

art, drawing, vector
More experimentation with loose vector technique and this time it’s fowl. 100% vectors and fast and loose style. Really enjoyed this one and almost as close in feeling to drawing freehand with atoms on organic matter as I can remember. Great fun.
